One person's trash...

(I found this through Twitter)

Chery Legg and her family timed their outing to Windsor Lake this week just in time to save two lives.

As the family started its morning trot Monday around the lake at Boardwalk Park, noises from a nearby trash can caught their attention.

“I started digging around in there. My first impression was, ‘Oh my gosh, there is a baby in the trash can.’ And as I started digging more it sounded like kittens,” Legg said. “I finally found a white plastic bag and opened it up to find two little puppies.”

Legg described the white and dark brown female puppies as cold. Neither had its eyes open. She said the white puppy still had its umbilical cord attached. Legg continued to rummage through the trash can to make sure there weren’t any other puppies.

“I didn’t know what to do with them. They were so cold, and I didn’t know if they were OK. I didn’t know how old they were, and they didn’t have their eyes open,” Legg said.

Legg and her mother, Annabel Suppes, wrapped the animals in a jacket and took them to Mountainwood Pet Hospital, 1525 Main St. in Windsor. Legg said the hospital gave her a warming pad and instructions to feed them. She brought the puppies home with her for the day, where her 5-year-old son, Quin, named them Cupcake and Pearl.

“I had them for a few hours, which was long enough because we were all getting really attached,” Legg said.

Legg said she could not care for the puppies because she already had a dog of her own and just put another dog to sleep in November. So the puppies were taken to Animal Rescue Connection Inc., in Greeley, where staff members have been monitoring them hourly.

By Tuesday, the puppies were eating and going to the bathroom. Staff members at Mountainwood said the puppies are about five days old and possibly are a Chihuahua mix breed. Once they get older, the puppies will develop more features and their exact breed may be better determined.

“They are doing really well,” said Rose Carroll, a foster volunteer with Animal Rescue Connection, on Wednesday afternoon. “I don’t anticipate any problems.

Carroll said the puppies are staying with several foster kittens she also is watching.

“They are improving very well and doing what they are supposed to be doing,” Carroll said.

The puppies, which will be spayed, should be available for adoption in about eight to 10 weeks, she said.

Vikki Miller, a code officer with the Windsor Police Department, went back to Windsor Lake with Legg on Monday to check the area for more puppies, but she did not find any.

The Windsor Police Department is asking for help from the public in identifying the animals’ owner. Windsor Police Chief John Michaels said the owner could face misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.

“I hope they can find who would do such a horrible thing,” Legg said.

Carroll said people who cannot care for their animals should always call an animal rescue or shelter. She said, unlike Animal Rescue Connection Inc., some shelters charge a surrender fee. She recommends people looking to surrender their animals visit www.petfinder.com to find the closest animal or rescue shelter.

“God just put us there (Monday). It was good for them (puppies), but kind of bittersweet to know there are people out there who can do that kind of thing,” Legg said. “There is a billion other places you can take them or spay or neuter your dog.”

Fingerprint Friday - Springtime Beauty

This is my favorite time of year and I love seeing God's Fingerprints all around me in the blossoming trees and bushes and flowers. These make my heart sing.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There is a song by Steven Curtis Chapman that says:

I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you
I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know it's true
You're a masterpiece
That all creation quietly applauds
And you're covered with the fingerprints of God

Where do you see God's fingerprints? In nature? kids? animals? They are all around us!

Fingerprint Friday - Springtime and Snow

My Fingerprints for today are beautiful flowers that have bloomed during our warm, spring days ... except for two days this week when the night temperatures dipped below freezing and we got some snow.

Flowers at my church last Sunday...

Flowers at work on Monday...

Brrrrrrrrr. The patio at work on Tuesday...

Hopefully, that's the last snow of the season. I'm grateful that now we're back to warm temps and sunshine again.

'Miracle' sandhill crane survives after arrow shot

AP Wire Story

MILWAUKEE – A sandhill crane that was captured in central Wisconsin with an arrow through her body is due to be released after what a veteran bird rehabilitator calls a truly amazing recovery. Bird watcher Don Darnell from Eden Prairie, Minn., spotted the crane standing by the road near Wisconsin Rapids as he and his wife were driving through last Labor Day weekend.

"We couldn't believe it. This bird had an arrow clean through it," Darnell said. "We got out of the car to see if we could get a hold of it but it was too fast and got away."

They also alerted police and other authorities, but the injured crane remained on the loose.

Then, one evening in late September, 11-year-old Monica Schaetz saw the same bird in a stream near her home with its mate and a young crane — and with the arrow still through its body.

"Her and I were going for a walk that night — she insisted on going along," said Monica's mother, Connie. "She saw the crane across the street. It was a good thing she went with me."

The next day, Connie reached bird rehabilitator Marge Gibson, executive director of the Raptor Education Group, Inc., in Antigo. Gibson and wildlife rehabilitator Nicki Christianson of Wisconsin Rapids developed a capture plan. On Sept. 29, more than two dozen people helped locate and capture the weakened crane.

The arrow was quickly removed.

Gibson said the crane had a bad infection but survived during treatment and spent the winter at her center, serving as a foster parent for six young cranes that came in with a variety of injuries in late fall.

Through the recovery, Gibson had her doubts whether the crane could ever be released.

"I didn't think she'd ever fly again," she said, but a couple weeks ago she went to check on the crane in a large flight building and got a surprise.

"She flew straight over the top of my head," she said.

She said the bird's survival has been miraculous, first when the arrow missed any vital organs and then when the infection failed to kill her.

"I've done this for 40 years and I've never seen anything like this before," she said.

"It's such a heartbreaking story, and then the fact that she's going back is more than we could have ever hoped for."

Plans call for releasing the crane Wednesday, unless snow or freezing rain makes it too dangerous for Gibson to take the bird on the trip from Antigo to Wisconsin Rapids and postpones the release a day or so.

The crane's mate and the young crane have been seen in the area after returning from migration.

Cranes mate for life. Gibson wants to get the female back in the wild before the male starts looking for a replacement.

No one has been charged with shooting the crane, despite a reward offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The sandhill crane is a federally protected species.
